LIVE> STOP 86/OVERVIEW 00:23:52 08:06:30 2exTOR/1exOTT/ Two recent stories
have once again drawn attention to the problem of violence against women.
Stop 86 is a women's shelter in Toronto, one of the first such shelters in
Canada. The same week Stop 86 was celebrating its 25th anniversary, the
Women's Health Forum in Ottawa reported that violence against women costs
Canadian society 4.2 billion dollars a year. We'll come back to the numbers
in a little while, but first, in our studio in Toronto is Joyce Mino, one
of the first workers at Stop 86 and Cheryl Torrance, a front-line counselor
and former resident of the shelter... (BRIDGE)...Cheryl Torrance is a
counselor and former resident of Stop 86, a women's shelter in Toronto,
Joyce Mino is a long-time worker at the shelter which has just celebrated
its 25th anniversary. Violence against women is a problem that people are
more aware of now than they were 25 years ago so when the numbers hit the
headlines, saying violence to women costs Canada 4.2 billion dollars a
year, even people who work in the field were shocked. Louise Hanvey is
co-author of the research paper that highlighted that cost and she's in our
Ottawa studio.
